Best places to fish in Ogallala

Ogallala is the gateway to Lake McConaughy, or Big Mac, Nebraska's largest reservoir and a standout fishery on the North Platte. Walleye draw the most attention, but the lake is loaded with white bass, wiper - the hard-pulling hybrid striped bass - and trophy-class catfish, while the tailwater below Kingsley Dam gives up trout. Guides jig and troll the points, humps and river channel for walleye, chase surfacing schools of white bass and wiper in summer, and soak baits for big flatheads and channel cats. The reservoir's long sandy shorelines and wide open water fish best from spring through summer, when walleye move shallow to spawn and warming water fires up the wiper bite.
