Before you calculate
Look for the phrases gratuity included, service charge and crew fee in the booking confirmation. They do not always mean the same thing, so ask whether the money is distributed to the captain, mate and deckhands.
The percentages here are reference points, not mandatory rules. Our full guide explains how fishing charter gratuity works on private, shared and captain-only trips.
Fishing charter tip FAQ
How much should you tip a fishing charter crew?
Many US charter customers use 15-20% of the core charter price as a starting reference when service is professional, but customs and operator policies vary. Check whether gratuity is already included.
Do you tip the captain or the first mate?
Crew arrangements vary. Guests often give one combined gratuity to the captain, first mate or designated crew member and ask whether it will be shared with everyone who worked the trip.
Should a group calculate one tip or separate tips?
For a private charter, one group tip calculated from the full charter fee is usually simplest. The calculator shows each person’s share so one organizer can collect it.
Do you still tip when you do not catch fish?
A slow fishing day can still merit a normal tip when the crew is prepared, attentive and professional. Catch results are not guaranteed. Poor service or safety problems are different and should be addressed with the operator.
